The Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology – GeoEcoMar organize Wednesday, 27^th of November 2013, starting with 10.00 a.m, in Constanta, Hotel Bulevard, the closure conference of the Romania – Bulgaria Cross Border Cooperation project MARINEGEOHAZARD – “Set-up and implementation of key core components of a regional early-warning system for marine geohazards of risk to the Romanian-Bulgarian Black Sea coastal area”.

MARINGEOHAZARD project achieved the first system of monitoring and real-time warning of marine hazards in the Black Sea.

Bringing together the scientific expertise of Romania and Bulgaria, two centers of monitoring and warning have been accomplished within MARINEGEOHAZARD project, at Constanţa (Romania) and Varna (Bulgaria). Based on a regional system, these are monitoring the western part of the Black Sea. The data stored and processed in the two centers serve to effectively substantiate the management of emergency situations and decision making by the competent authorities, regarding protection of communities, coastal infrastructure, as well as the environment, from the consequences that can be caused by marine hazards.

Data measured by the monitoring networks (Euxinus, for the marine environment, GeoPontica, for the coastal area) also provide, in continuous flow, data extremely necessary for the scientific research of the marine environment.

The project was implemented by the National Research-Development Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology – GeoEcoMar, as lead partner, along with the following partners: National Institute of Earth Physics (România), Varna Institute of Oceanography (IO-BAS), Bulgaria and Geological Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Science (GI-BAS).

The thematic course “MARINEGEOHAZARD – the first real-time warning system for marine geohazards in the Black Sea” will be held Thursday, December 6, 2012, 16:00, at the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics of the University of Bucharest, PA Amphitheater.
The presentation is delivered by Dr. Eng Gheorghe Oaie, General Director of NIRD GeoEcoMar and Project Manager of “MARINEGEOHAZARD – Set-up and implementation of key core components of a regional early-warning system for marine geohazards of risk to the Romanian-Bulgarian Black Sea coastal area”.
The thematic course is part of the information and communication activities within MARINEGEOHAZARD project, aiming to raise awareness regarding the risk of marine geohazards in the Black Sea and the possibility of real-time warning on this phenomenon.
MARINEGEOHAZARD project goal is to implement an integrated real-time system warning for marine geohazards (submarine earthquakes, landslides, extreme waves, etc.) with potentially harmful effects for Romania and Bulgaria coastal areas, as well as to improve the regional capacity for assessment and rapid notification of natural marine geohazards.
The project is financed by the Romania-Bulgaria Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013 and co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.

EurOcean Professor Mário Ruivo Prize – Dissemination Request

EurOcean – European Centre for Information on Marine Science and Technology has launched, on the 19th of August, the Movie Prize “Professor Mário Ruivo”.

The Movie Prize will be conferred to a student or a team of students (with an age range from 12 to 18 years old – Junior category or, with an age range from 18 to 21 years old – Senior category) to award an original Movie related to the marine environment. This Prize intents to raise public awareness to the importance of the Ocean and the Ocean related services to the Humankind.

The Prize will recognize the merit and the quality of the Participants when producing the Movie as well as the potential impact of the Movie. A total sum of 5.000 EUR will be divided between the Participants categories: 2.000EUR will be awarded to the winners of the junior category; 3.000 EUR will be awarded to the winners of the senior category.

EurOcean will also support the travels and accommodation expenses to the awardee or awardees (Junior category: 2 persons, max. 3 if team application including Adult Advisor; Senior category: 1 person, max. 2 if team application) to receive the Prize in Lisbon.
